Taking my Elite Scout pledge out in the wilds was such an exciting thought. I had all these dreams of doing it in front of the campfire while the whole troop toasted s’mores and serenaded me with their favorite scouting songs. Mother Nature, however, saw everything a little differently. An hour or so before my special ceremony, the skies opened, and the most torrential rain storm kicked off, which showed absolutely no sign of relenting. Everyone rushed for their tents and all hopes of my romantic, moonlit induction were dashed. Scoutmaster Scott instead dragged me into the admin tent and told me that the ceremony would have to take place there instead. Rather than the sounds of singing, I’d have to put up with the roar of rain incessantly drumming on the canvas above us. Still, the motto of the scouts is to “be prepared” and top of the list of things which need to be prepared for is the weather.To begin with, of course, I was bitterly disappointed, but once I’d gotten inside the tent, I started to cheer up. I mean, it was weirdly cozy in there and not everyone can say that they took their Elite Scout pledge in the middle of a crazy thunderstorm. There was also something quite exciting about being holed up in a tent with Scoutmaster Scott.
